At War With Self - Torn Between Dimensions 2005
9.5
Prog Metal
quot;At War With Self"... instrumental progressive metal. Well with a name like this I was expecting something very heavy and technical in the vein of Liquid Tension Experiment or even heavier. But not at all...

This is a quite relaxed album, even few moments can be described as "metal". Most of the song are good progressive rock with a lot of mood changes, but especially acoustic guitar/keyboard/piano interludes.

Wetton/Downes - Icon II - Rubicon 2006
8.7
Prog-Related Rock
It's nice to see those two guys do another album after the success of the first Icon (and after the split of Asia). On the second Icon, no masterpiece song like "In The End" from the first Icon, but a set a good songs ranging from rockers to ballads.

Kreator - Endorama 1999
7.8
Heavy Non-Prog Metal
This album is quite different from everything Kreator has done in their career, except maybe "Outcast". No real speed metal here, all songs are mid paced with some goth, classical and electronic influences.

Borknagar - Origin 2006
9.7
Prog Rock
A beautiful album in the vein of Green Carnation's "The Acoustic Verses". Songs on this release are however more folkish and progressive, with a few weird moments resembling acoustic versions of songs on Arcturus' "La Masquerade Infernale".

One could only regret the shortness of the album (only 39 minutes)...

Amorphis - Eclipse 2006
9.6
Non-Prog Death Metal
One of the good surprises of 2006...

Another release with lyrics based on traditionnal finnish folklore. The structure of the songs is here more classic with verses and choruses, and even growled vocals make a small return (fortunately used sparingly). Keyboardist Santeri Kallio has become a full time member and even contributed actively to the songwriting. The music itself is stronger than on the previous release, with powerful and catchy songs...

The new singer uses three types of voice: melodic (usually on verses), low rumbling/power voice (usually on choruses) and growls... and it fits the music perfectly.

Highly recommended.

Green Carnation - The Acoustic Verses 2006
9.7
Prog Rock
Usually when heavy bands do lighter stuff it's brilliant... and this release makes no exception. Opeth's "Damnation" or Borknagar's "Origin" can be seen as references, but I would also add Alice in Chain's "Jar of Flies/SAP", since some of those songs have a slightly grungy feeling too.

Opeth - Damnation 2003
10.0
Atmospheric Prog Rock
I was waiting for eight years for Opeth to deliver an album without extreme metal parts, and this is it - the complete antithesis from the twin album Deliverance (their heaviest album). Most people will find it too mellow, but not me... it's simply outstanding. Fans of Anathema and Porcupine Tree should love this album too.

Highly recommended (one of the 3 albums of my collection that could pretend to a maximum rating...)

Helloween - Chameleon 1993
9.5
Non-Prog Power Metal
I don't see why fans despised this album... from my point of view it's simply brilliant. The music is much more diverse here than on any Helloween album, even the lyrics have more matter.

Maybe the hardcore headbanging fans simply didn't like all the mellow parts that make this record more accessible...

Green Jellÿ - Cereal Killer Soundtrack 1993
6.5
Non-Prog Rock
This is what you get when Metallica meets the Monty Python...

Actually, this band is more like a joke project from guys describing themselves as the worst band in the world, and therefore choosing a band name that would reflect the quality of their music. The turning point occured when they met GWAR and learned how to sculpt costumes and props from a bunch of weird things... from that point they never tried to improve, disguising their lack of ability behind their visual weirdness.

Funny stuff...

Theatre Of Tragedy - Aegis 1998
9.9
Non-Prog Doom Metal
Probably the other most influential album in the gothic metal genre with Tiamat's "A Deeper Kind Of Slumber".

On this album, the male death metal growls have been replaced by dark melancholic clean vocals. The music remains very doomy, but with less contrast between aggressive and mellow parts. Some of the songs even have a catchy melody...

Clearly the best album from the band. Highly recommended.

My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings 2006
9.7
Non-Prog Doom Metal
One of the good surprises of the year 2006.

Continuing on the same doomdeath style that made them so popular, My Dying Bride releases here an album considered by the band as their best work to date. And I would tend to agree, as I would rate this album equally to their two other masterpieces "Turn Loose The Swans" and "The Angel And The Dark River".

Compared to the last few albums, the band decided to use *much* less death metal growls (as they simply didn't fit the music they wrote for the album), so you'll only get 3 lines of growls in "Love's Intolerable Pain" (mixed with clean vocals too), 4 in "Deeper Down" and a small passage at the end of "The Blood, the Wine, the Roses" (speaking of which, it's the most extreme stuff they wrote since their debut album... but it's only 30 seconds long).

The clean vocals have also improved, with a more emotional high pitched tone mixed with more spoken/whispered words.

Highly recommended.

Metal Church - A Light In The Dark 2006
5.5
Heavy Non-Prog Metal
What a disappointing album, after the two good releases "Masterpeace" and "The Weight Of The World"...

The music is totally unmelodic... where are all the epics gone? Except "Temple Of The Sea", all the other songs are quite alike, just plain classic heavy metal.

But the main problem here are the vocals... what happened to the singer between "The Weight Of The World" and this? His voice has changed from a David Wayne style to some kind of cartoon character voice (you know the one with a lisping voice...)

If you like Metal Church, stick to the old albums and avoid this release...

Tiamat - A Deeper Kind Of Slumber 1997
9.9
Atmospheric Prog-Related Metal
A love it or hate it album. For me it's the former... it's simply brilliant.

Clearly a milestone in the gothic metal genre. All death metal influences are gone, replaced by a Pink Floyd-like sound. It's slow and depressive, but unlike My Dying Bride, the melody doesn't rely on distorted guitars but more on acoustic guitars, keyboards and other instruments (sitar, flute, oboe, violin, cello).

Highly recommended.
