One Size Fits All 1975
by Frank ZappaMyspace.com
10.0
Prog Rock in Opposition

One Size Fits All is a milestone in Frank Zappa´s discography and a favorite of mine. The weird humour, the tightly played fusion rythms, the bluesy guitar licks and soloing, the clever vocal arrangement and funny lyrics. It´s all there to make One Size Fits All one of Zappa´s best albums. Inca Roads is probably the the song that Zappa wrote that comes closest to the classic definition of progressive rock, but imidiately after that song ends we´re treated with the silly but extremely humorous Can´t Afford No Shoes. All songs are of high quality but the aforementioned Inca Roads, Floentine Pogen and Andy really makes my blood boil. Evelyn, A Modified Dog Always make me roll over with laughter, even after listening to the album countless times. All in all this is probably the best place to start if you´re new to Zappa. A masterpiece.

Piece of Time 1990
by AtheistMyspace.com
8.6
Prog Death Metal

Piece of Time is the debut full-length studio album by American technical death metal act Atheist. A classic album in the genre. While Piece of Time holds many great elements it´s not fully on par with its two successors Unquestionable Presence and Elements. It should be considered a seminal album in the technical death metal genre though and songs like the title track and especially I Deny are excellent examples of Atheist at their best.

Elements 1993

Latin Prog Death Metal/Fusion

Elements is the third full-length studio album by American jazz/ fusion death metal act Atheist. A groundbreaking mix of fusion/ jazz, latin musical elements and death metal. Elements takes the the fusion elements that Atheist introduced on Unquestionable Presence and and builds even further on their already unique style. A seminal album in the genre and a true masterpiece IMO. The musicianship is outstanding in addition to some really innovative compositions.

Unquestionable Presence 1991

Prog Death Metal/Jazz

One of my absolute favorite albums. I´ve listened to this album countless times since I got it almost 20 years ago and I never get tired of it. With Unquestionable Presence, Atheist showed that they were light years ahead of their contemporary death metal collegues. The mix of thrashy death metal and jazz/ fusion elements was something unheard of at that time. A truly groundbreaking album which paved the way for other technical / progressive death metal artists like Cynic, Gorguts and Pestilence ( IMO even Death were influenced by Atheist and visa versa of course). A Masterpiece.

Gabriel 2009
by BelieverMyspace.com
9.0
Prog-Related Thrash Metal

Believer´s return after a very lengthy break is very welcome in my world. Gabriel is without a doubt one of the best releases this year for me personally. We´re talking prog-related thrash metal of the highest standard. Brutal production, caustic vocal delivery, and top notch musicianship. The variation between compositions is good which makes Gabriel an album you can listen to again and again without getting tired of it. And don´t let the Christian metal tag scare you away. The lyrics are not preachy but rather info on how Believer sees the world. Fans of technical thrash metal are recommended to check this one out.

Evolution: Creatio Ex Nihilio 2009
by Enochian TheoryMyspace.com
8.6
Atmospheric Prog Metal

Enochian Theory is a promising young British progressive rock/ metal act. Evolution: Creatio Ex Nihilio is an ambitious concept album full of great emotions and dark atmosphere. Especially Porcupine Tree comes to mind but Enochian Theory definitely have their own unique sound.

Spectral Extravagance 2009
by CerebrumMyspace.com
8.8
Prog Death Metal

Cerebrum is a new Greek technical/ progressive death metal act and Spectral Extravagance is their debut full-lenght studio album. The music is technical/ progressive death metal with an early 90s US death metal sensibility. Especially Morbid Angel comes to mind a couple of times during the playing time. Cerebrum is a bit more progressive in sound than Morbid Angel though and acts such as Gorguts, Pestilence, Nocturnus and Theory in Practice also comes to mind. The album features a guest appearance by Nile drummer George Kollias who plays the drums on the album. A very promising debut album and a recommendable purchase for fans of the genre.

Constant 2007
by TholusMyspace.com
9.0
Prog Jazz/Death Metal

Great Technical/ Progressive death metal album project by former Estradasphere drummer Dave Murray. The music is written by Mike Johnson but performed by a lineup of very competent musicians. Brutal technical death metal with jazz influenced drumming. The lyrical theme is a sci-fi story. A great album in the technical/ progressive death metal genre which deserves much more attention than it´s gotten in the years since its release. I don´t hesitate to call Constant one of the best releases in the genre in the last 10 years.

Roxy & Elsewhere 1974, Live
by Frank ZappaMyspace.com
9.2
Prog Rock in Opposition

One of the best Zappa live albums. I greatly enjoy this hilariously funny, extremely wellplayed and essential Frank Zappa album. Lots of classics on this one including Cheepnis, Penguin in Bondage, Echidna´s Arf ( Of You) and the 16:40 minute long Be-Bop Tango with audience participation and the legendary Zappa comment: "Jazz is not dead. It Just Smells Funny".
