About Me
First and foremost I am a long time music fan with Rush having been my favorite band for almost 20 years now, followed closely by Yes.  Progressive rock tends to be the dominant style of music that I listen to, however, I am a fan of much classic rock and more straightforward rock bands and artists as well.  I suppose that I am a prog fan trapped in a pop fan's mind.  I am also a long time fan of metal but I have my limits and I am quite adverse to extreme metal and extreme metal vocals.  My musical achilles heel seems to be the heavy metal pop ballad, which I have always had a soft spot in my ear for, no matter how cheesy.  My ability to rate music is quite limited, however, I do give it the old college try and hopefully there is some sort of pattern or consistency that can be found amongst my reviews.

Van Halen - The Best of Both Worlds 2004, Best Of
8.5
Non-Prog Metal
Hard to go wrong with a 2 CD set that includes 36 Van Halen songs, including 3 new songs with Sammy Hagar singing. I saw them live in concert in 2004 during their reunion tour promoting this greatest hits package.

Various Artists - Armageddon 1998, Compilation
7.8
Non-Prog Rock
This movie soundtrack album to the movie Armageddon features songs from Aerosmith, Journey, Jon Bon Jovi and the theme music from ex-Yes man Trevor Rabin. For me, this is one of the better movie soundtracks that have been created in the choice of songs and bands fit my tastes quite well.

Vasil Zook - The Last Live Show 1997, Live
7.2
Prog Rock
Live album recorded in 1977 that had 5 live performances together but no albums. The music is mostly instrumental and jamming and includes covers of Knights from Peter Banks, the Close Encounters theme song, and King Crimson's Talking Drum and Larks Tongues in Aspic Pt. 2. It is a bit quirky but quite good. Lots of drums, mini-moog, and mellotron, with some good bass playing as well.

Acroma - Orbitals 2003
7.7
Non-Prog Rock
Acroma is an alternative rock band that sounds eerily like Tool, A Perfect Circle, and somewhat like Soundgarden. I don't think that they are a prog band, but since I don't know what makes Tool considered a prog band, maybe Acroma are an alternative prog band in the vein of Tool.

Flash - Out of Our Hands 1973
8.5
Symphonic Prog Rock
Ex-Yes guitarist Peter Banks leads the band Flash on their 3rd album which sounds quite a lot like Yes. It is well worth tracking down and listening too for that alone.

Prog-Related Album Oriented Rock/Pop
Generic Progressive pop rock/metal from Billy Greer of Kansas fame. Enjoyable to listen to, but nothing that would excite most progressive rock fans.

Satellite - A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset 2003
9.7
Symphonic Neo Prog Rock
This is a magnificent first album from this band from Poland led by drummer Wojtek Szadkowski. It is the first of a three album set based around a similar concept. The music, singing, and lyrics are all extremely well and tastefully done.

Engine - Engine 1999
7.4
Non-Prog Metal
The debut side project from Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder and Bassist Joey Vera. It is good but not great. Fates Warning is an excellent progressive metal band. Engine, unfortunately, lacks the progressive and is mostly just a metal band. Thus, good but not great.

Flash - Psychosync 1997, Live
7.6
Eclectic Prog Rock
Flash was ex-Yes guitarist's band following his departure from Yes. I figured a live album with this much feedback deserved a little feedback as a result. I guess this is a release of a former live bootleg. The music is good, but the sound quality is quite poor.

Qango - Qango Live in the Hood 2000
8.0
Prog Rock
Live album by short-lived band formed by Carl Palmer and John Wetton, which played mostly cover songs of Asia and ELP songs. Enjoyable show, but really not much more than what an ELP or Asia show might sound like.

The very good debut album from Cairo with a sound tracing back to Emerson Lake and Palmer.

32 of the best metal songs from the Metal Gods. Sadly, no unreleased tracks on this one.

Various Artists - A Tribute to Judas Priest Legends of Metal 1997, Tribute
8.3
Non-Prog NWoBHM
A Who's Who of Heavy Metal and Prog Metal got together on this Century Media tribute album to Judas Priest. Like most tribute albums, this is a good listen for curiosity sake, but there is no improvements on the originals.

Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution 2004
8.2
Non-Prog Power Metal
It is 2004 and all is well with the world. There is a new Judas Priest album, and the vocalist is Rob Halford. Admittedly, this album doesn't have the memories associated with it that the earlier albums do, but it is still a really good album.

Judas Priest - Demolition 2001
8.0
Non-Prog Thrash Metal
It is hard to get used to Judas Priest with Ripper Owens as their singer, but this album is actual quite decent. Much better than Ripper's debut Jugulator. Tracks like Hell Is Home, Jekyll and Hyde, and Bloodsuckers are actually quite good.

Judas Priest - 98 Live Meltdown 1998, Live
7.8
Heavy Non-Prog NWoBHM
This is an interesting live album. This is a 2 CD live set of the first tour with Ripper Owens on vocals. It includes 24 songs, including 5 new ones, but includes many songs from all eras of Priest. Quite a good song selection, and Ripper Owens does an honorable job as the lead singer.

Judas Priest - Jugulator 1997
5.0
Non-Prog Thrash Metal
Admittedly, I haven't listened to this album enough to give it a fair shake, but it is too thrashy for my tastes. On occasion, with the screams Ripper Owens sounds a lot like Rob Halford, but on the rest of the album he just sounds like a run of the mill thrash metal singer. Ironically, Rob Halford left the band to pursue a different type of metal, and he became for thrashy too, and quite frankly I don't care all that much for his solo career either.

Judas Priest - Painkiller 1990
9.3
Heavy Prog-Related Power Metal
This is the final Judas Priest album with Rob Halford on the microphone. It would be 7 years until another Priest album, with a new singer and a thrashier sound. Yet 7 years later, in 2004, Halford will return but by then the Priest were just a distant memory. This album has a bit of everything and I suppose may be their first progressive "metal" album, although it is more metal than progressive. And the Priest still knows how to start off an album with the heavy drum beat of Painkiller. Other highlights include Metal Meltdown and Night Crawler, but again all songs are worth the listen.
