About Me
First and foremost I am a long time music fan with Rush having been my favorite band for almost 20 years now, followed closely by Yes.  Progressive rock tends to be the dominant style of music that I listen to, however, I am a fan of much classic rock and more straightforward rock bands and artists as well.  I suppose that I am a prog fan trapped in a pop fan's mind.  I am also a long time fan of metal but I have my limits and I am quite adverse to extreme metal and extreme metal vocals.  My musical achilles heel seems to be the heavy metal pop ballad, which I have always had a soft spot in my ear for, no matter how cheesy.  My ability to rate music is quite limited, however, I do give it the old college try and hopefully there is some sort of pattern or consistency that can be found amongst my reviews.

The Who - Who's Better, Who's Best 1988, Best Of
8.9
Prog-Related Hard Rock
In my opinion, an excellent compilation. For me, The Who are one of those bands where the greatest hits album is much better than any of their individual albums.

Queensrÿche - Take Cover 2007
7.5
Prog-Related Metal
Unlike many, I tend to enjoy cover songs and cover albums as a way of seeing how some of my favorite bands might sound doing another bands music and there are always a few song that I have never previously heard before so it might lead to new discoveries. That being said, while a fun listen, I would guess that this was done under label pressure and to fulfill contract obligations and won't appeal to those who frown upon these kind of albums.

Various Artists - When Worlds Collide: Inside Out Music Sampler Vol. 2 2003, Compilation
8.9
Neo Prog Rock/Metal
I received this sample with a copy of Progression magazine. It includes 14 songs from 14 different artists who released albums on the Inside Out Music label in 2003. This is a phenomenal lineup. Each of these songs is magnificent, and I was encouraged to purchase all of the related albums except for the Devin Townsend Band album, but this song sounds promising.

The Mob - The Mob 2005
8.7
Non-Prog Metal
King's X meets Winger. This supergroup's debut and only album to-date, brings Doug Pinnick from King's X together with Reb Beach of Winger fame to create a very enjoyable hard rock/hair metal album. The album was produced by Kip Winger and also includes Kelly Keagy from Night Ranger on drums and Timothy Drury from Whitesnake and formerly of The Eagles on keyboards. For fans of the aforementioned bands.

Non-Prog Glam Metal
I purchased this album solely for the purpose of owning a version of Turn Up The Radio, which was a hair metal anthem from my teenage years.

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe - Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe 1989
8.7
Symphonic Prog Rock
I know. I am strange. Most people do not like the ABWH album. I like it quite a bit however. I also like the Yes Union album too however, so take that for whatever it is worth.

Aerosmith - Aerosmith 1973
8.3
Non-Prog Hard Rock/Metal
The debut album from Steven Tyler and company contains Dream On, one of the greatest power ballads ever written, and Mama Kin, a really good rocking song that I had never heard until Guns and Roses covered it many, many years later. The rest of the album is decent blues rock in the typical Aerosmith sound which will be further developed on future albums.

I am not a big fan of David Bowie's and I don't know how representative this compilation is of his catalogue, but I do like many of the songs that are included on this compiliation.

The Moody Blues - A Night At Red Rocks With The Colorado Symphony Orchestra 2003, Live
9.5
Orchestral Prog Rock
This is one of my favorite live albums of all time. The original was released in 1993 with 12 or 13 songs on it. The expanded 2-disc edition was released in 2003. These discs consist of many of the Moody Blues greatest songs played live with a symphony orchestra. Highly recommended to fans of the Moody Blues and symphonic prog music.

Sting - Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984-1994 1994, Best Of
9.0
Non-Prog Rock/Pop
This is a compilation of songs from the Police frontman's solo career. I believe that Sting is generally labeled as adult contemporary or easy listening but I find his music to be much better than that of artists that are generally labelled as such. There appears to be various versions of this compilation album. My version has only 14 songs and includes Fortress Around Your Heart and Be Still My Beating Heart, and it does not include the 5 songs that I have marked as bonus. The track listing is slightly different as well. As will most compilation albums, this is a good retrospective of Sting's solo career. There are other songs that I might have included and some that I might not have included but overall it is a good representation of his career. This also includes 2 new songs which I believe were first released on this album When We Dance and The Cowboy Song.

Various Artists - Scream 2 1997, Compilation
7.0
Non-Prog Rock
This album is the soundtrack to the Wes Craven movie Scream 2. I purchased it used because it had a decent lineup of alternative and pop artists including Dave Matthews, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters, Tonic, Everclear, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. As with most soundtracks, some of the music is pretty good and some of it I could do without. All in all this is an OK album.

Def Leppard - Pyromania 1983
9.0
Non-Prog Hard Rock
I now own this on CD, but Pyromania was one of the two first proper rock albums that I ever owned on vinyl. I got this album and Quiet Riot's Metal Health as Christmas presents. Anyhow, I still really like this album all these years later.

Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun 2000

Wow. Much anticipated and long awaited. This completes the Porcupine Discography as far as full albums. I don't have Nil Recurring yet. I immensely enjoyed this album on first listen.

King Crimson - THRaKaTTaK 1996, Live
5.0
Prog Jazz
Where's the music???? I know that this is the kind of stuff prog fans seem to really like about King Crimson, but seriously, where's the music???? Once in a while they throw in some song structures, but mostly this is just a noise salad; random noises tossed together. And I suppose I tend to prefer cheese with my salads, and there is little of that to be found here.

Various Artists - Analecta Volume 1 2004, Compilation
9.5
Symphonic Prog Rock
This is a sampler album created by ProgRock Records to promote their excellent stable of unknown modern progressive rock bands. This is easily one of my favorite compilation albums of all times. This "free" CD did cost me tons of money however, after I went out and purchased most of the albums featured on it.

Various Artists - Small Soldiers 1998, Compilation
5.0
Non-Prog Rock
I bought this album because it had a remix of Tom Sawyer on it. There are actually some good songs on here, but the re-mix versions have little added value to the original songs.

Focus - Focus 8 2002
7.8
Symphonic Prog Rock
Other than the song Hocus Pocus, this is my first experience with the band Focus. Based on this listen I am rating it as good. I can not say how this compares to other Focus albums as far as originality or not. There are a couple of songs with slight yodels ala Hocus Pocus and at least one with vocals, which surprised me a bit because I thought they were strictly an instrumental band.
