Spock's BeardListen - X 2010
8.8
Symphonic Prog Rock
This is a return to form of Spock's Beard: Much better than the previous records, on par with V. It's jazzy symphonic rock (don't know where to put the jazzy part in the tag editor...) and I think it's a great record.

This is the weakest Neal Morse-era Spock's Beard album. While it isn't bad, it certainly doesn't rank up with their other masterpieces. Good, but non essential.

Prog-Related Rock
This is a pop/rock album first, but it sure is a good one. There are a few passable track, but as a whole this is a very solid album, with a few memorable moments. I recommend this people who want the more accessible side of Spock's Beard.

Their second album was the first with Ryo on keys, and he does a great job. The songwriting is very solid, and it has the classic Spock's Beard sound throughout the album. The Doorway reminds me of Genesis' Firth of Fifth. Great Album!

SB's third album is really great, and has some classic songs by the Beard. Harm's Way and Flow are the highlights, and every song is really good here. While it isn't without flaws, it doesn't have a bad track on it.

The best album so far after Neal's departure! A good album with many memorable moments, and some great musicianship. There are a few minutes of filler, but this is still a great album for anyone looking for a post-Neal Morse SB album.

This is an excellent debut album from Spock's Beard, and really shows what a great band they are. The FU section in The Water may offend some, but this is a great album that I recommend to anyone.

The first album after the departure of Neal Morse clearly shows they are hurting, but they pull off a decent album with a few memorable moments. Not the place to start listening to the Beard, but it is worth a listen.

This is often regarded as Spock's Beard's magnum opus, and I definitely think this is a great album. The opening and closing epics are masterpieces, and everything inbetween is great too. Highly recommended!

Spock's BeardListen - Snow 2002
10.0
Symphonic Neo Prog Rock
This is one of the greatest double concept albums ever, and I would actually rate this masterpiece above The Lamb, Tales From Topographic Oceans, and other classic double albums. A perfect 10 without a doubt, and will forever be one of the greatest albums ever released.

Prog Rock
This is one of my favorite albums and I sincerely believe it to be one of the very best prog albums.

I am a sucker for two-disc concept albums. And even though the Snow concept is a bit weak, I enjoy it nonetheless. It lacks the eerieness of The Lamb, but it does have a certain haunting aspect to it. Ultimately, it comes down to the music, which Spock's Beard delivers in heaping quantities and which given time, will soak right into your brain.

The initial overture gently grabs your hand and pulls you in to witness the birth of Snow and the world which ostracizes him because of his unique appearance. While some may complain of the opening songs ("Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Long Time Suffering") being more AOR than prog, there is no denying the emotionally charged lyrics and catchy hooks which are present in these songs. Neal Morse gives a passionate turn at lead vocals in this passage and presents the listener with the anguish that Snow lives with in his formative years.

New York is the setting (which does annoy me a bit as it seems too much like The Lamb) where Snow hopes to rise above the bigotry and bring hope to others who have been rejected by society. "Love Beyond Words" is a short ballad sandwhiched in between the hardest music that exists on the album. When I say "hard", I mean metal. "Welcome to NYC", "The 39th Street Blues" and "Devil's Got My Throat" are melodic, but hard and I'm not sure I've heard Neal Morse sing like this before. The effect is at first startling and then very gratifying, in my humble opinion.

The next portion is one of the best sections of the album with the songs "Open Wide the Flood Gates" and "Open the Gates Part 2". ... -> show full review

Spock's BeardListen - Octane 2005

Technical Prog-Related Rock
I really like this album. Spock's Beard really found their
footing with this album, on the previous one (Feel Euphoria)
they seemed a little bit unsure to me, partly trying new stuff
and emulating Neal's songwriting. On this album they are
confidently moving away from 70s prog rock, towards a modern
rock style that hasn't got "prog" written all over it. But he
old quirkyness is still there, in small doses. What really
counts is good songwriting, self confidence and
credibility, and they certainly have all that.

Symphonic Retro Prog Rock
What can I say - I love this album. Technically later Spock's Beard albums like V or Snow may be better, but in this case you can't really beat the charm and magic of a debut like this. Even long after Neal had left Spock's Beard the guys still played classics like The Light and Go The Way You Go on stage.

This album is essential to any modern prog rock collection. Having said that, it is a little bit derivative of the classic prog bands of the 70s. Although I personally think that Neal did a really good job and found a very unique way to blend all the influences into his very own, easily recognizable style ... some people disagree.
