Fates WarningListen - A Pleasant Shade of Grey 1997
9.4
Prog Metal
This album is on the mellow side of prog metal. Most of the songs are very emotional (not mentioning the ballads that have a large place here), sometimes even dark and depressive, with all the musicians doing a great job. The technical side is not forgotten, giving a balanced feeling to the 12 compositions. The vocals are outstanding, always between dream and doom...

Non-Prog Doom Metal
A true gem from a rather unknown australian metal band... This is pure doom metal, with slow riffs, emotional melodies, painful (but clean) male vocals. The music sounds a lot like My Dying Bride (and even more since keyboardist/violonist Martin Powell contributed to this album), but this record is way better than any My Dying Bride album both musically and vocally.

Manowar - Gods Of War 2007
9.4
Symphonic Non-Prog True Metal
This album is almost a concept album, the main theme being viking mythology, and in particular the story of the god Odin. Recurrent true metal Manowar themes appear here... the anthemic songs are here, the ballads are here, and even narrative parts... but no real fast paced song. In fact, this is the most mellow album the band has written since their debut "Battle Hymns". What is missing here is probably a bit of originality, but this is still a great album.

Non-Prog Metal/Rock
This album really sounds like a transitional album (even more now considering that both extreme vocalist and female vocalist have left the band). Without a permanent extreme vocalist, the main thing that strikes here is the minimal use of extreme vocals (only a few on two songs), with a clear change of sound toward more classic gothic/rock (Paradise Lost or Tiamat comes to mind) and less operatic moments, less keyboards and more guitars.

Prog-Related Rock
A magnificent album... Released between two extreme black metal albums, this one is pure acoustic and almost all instrumental. Great guitar work, clean vocals (the album is entirely sung in Norwegian), folkish tunes... Sadness and melancholy prevail on this album, except for short joyful moments, like on "Halling".

Prog Post Black Metal
This is a wonderful album. Dark, relaxing, poetic, full of
folkish influences... very fascinating. It would have been a
masterpiece but unfortunately the (harsh, black metal-like)
vocals are not of the same quality as the music and they often
feel out of place.

One of the most poorly produced albums I've ever heard. After releasing 3 albums called "Garage Days"... they finally released an album that sounds like it was recorded in a garage!

For me the best Therion album. The classical and metal parts are perfectly balanced, both classical and traditional metal singers do a great job, the production is awesome...

Symphonic Non-Prog Doom Metal
The only album from the band that has no growled vocals. The structure is classic doom metal with mid paced mellow songs and ballads, and some symphonic parts. A very enjoyable album...

Symphonic Prog-Related Power Metal
After the first listen, I found this album quite disappointing compared to "Sirius B". But after more listens I started to enjoy it... it's not a bad album, it's simply different from the previous releases.

In fact the main contributor to the orchestral feeling of previous Therion albums (Christofer Johnsson) did participate less in the songwriting. With the addition of more traditional vocalists (power metal singer Mats Leven, ex-King Diamond/Mercyful Fate drummer Snowy Shaw and two new female vocalists), the result sounds more "metal" and less symphonic. Orchestrations and classical singers are still used, just less...

TestamentListen - Low 1994
8.3
Non-Prog Thrash Metal
Testament reached the top of their career here. Songs are catchy as hell, and as diverse as you can get for a thrash metal band: fast, mid-paced, long, short, ballads, instrumentals... James Murphy does a great job as a replacement for Alex Skolnick and Chuck Billy has improved his voice a lot to give more diverse vocal patterns. I just regret the pointless death metal track ("Dog Faced Gods") here, which would have prefectly fit on their later releases... but really not here.

Spacey Prog Metal
This is an interesting album... a mix of instrumental metal in the vein of Joe Satriani and japanese manga/video game tunes. The music is a bit repetitive here, but it's very catchy.

Ivan BertollaListen - Beyond the Skies Eternity 2002

Prog Metal
This is gothic progressive instrumental metal... half way between progressive metal and gothic electronic (Era, Enigma...). The music in the 17 tracks here is very repetitive, so it's better to consider it like one big concept piece with 17 sections.

Solstice - Lamentations 1994
9.9
Non-Prog Doom Metal
This is one of the best doom metal album I've ever heard. The band manages to deliver at the same time ultra slow and heavy music. In fact I've never seen such a difference between the music (very heavy) and the vocals (clean, sad and melancholic) on an album. No trace of aggressivity here... it's always gloomy and depressive.

The Aurora ProjectListen - ....Unspoken Words 2005
8.6
Atmospheric Prog Metal
This is quite a nice album with very emotional content... but unfortunately it sounds too much like Riverside's Second Life Syndrome and will hardly stand the comparison.

Basically this is a concept album, an emotional journey through space consisting of songs mixed with spoken parts that describe the entries of a spaceship system log. I don't find the spoken parts that bad (there's even spacey music in the background sometimes), but the 6 minute "System Log" track is clearly redundant and could easily have been omitted.

Beyond TwilightListen - For the Love of Art and the Making 2006
9.7
Symphonic Prog Power Metal
This album is simply amazing...

A single composition divided in 43 sections dealing with concepts around the human nature. The music is rooted in the power metal genre, with a progressive structure and the addition of symphonic and classical elements.

Each section is a little piece of its own, and the band even says the whole album could be played in a CD player on shuffle mode (but I would not recommend listening to it that way because of the little "transitions" between most of the pieces).

Ion - Madre, Protégenos 2006
10.0
Minimalistic Prog Rock
The new album from ex-Anathema member Duncan Patterson. People familiar with his work in Antimatter will love this album. It is very hard to describe the beautiful music recorded here... perhaps a mix of acoustic Antimatter and Talk Talk (last two albums). Mostly classical instruments are used (flute, clarinet, mandoline, viola, classical percussion, harp), and if most of the songs are sung in english, other languages are used (which I didn't recognize... maybe brazilian, spanish and greek). And the beautiful voice of Emily A Saaen overwhelms the album with emotion...

If there are albums that can't be missed, then this is one of them.

At War With SelfListen - Torn Between Dimensions 2005
9.5
Prog Metal
quot;At War With Self"... instrumental progressive metal. Well with a name like this I was expecting something very heavy and technical in the vein of Liquid Tension Experiment or even heavier. But not at all...

This is a quite relaxed album, even few moments can be described as "metal". Most of the song are good progressive rock with a lot of mood changes, but especially acoustic guitar/keyboard/piano interludes.

Wetton/Downes - Icon II - Rubicon 2006
8.7
Prog-Related Rock
It's nice to see those two guys do another album after the success of the first Icon (and after the split of Asia). On the second Icon, no masterpiece song like "In The End" from the first Icon, but a set a good songs ranging from rockers to ballads.
