OpethMyspace.com - Watershed 2008
9.1
Prog Metal
A strong follow up to Ghost Reveries, with the same tendencies to add more mellow passages between the extreme parts. In fact, it's the only album (except of course Damnation) that has more songs with only clean vocals than songs with growls. The music is also quite different from the Still Life - Deliverance era, with half of the band having been replaced and with the addition of a permanent keyboardist. Sounds like we have here a transitional album, but the transition seems almost complete...

Def LeppardMyspace.com - Songs From the Sparkle Lounge 2008
4.0
Non-Prog Hard Rock
Take all the worst songs from recent albums starting with Adrenalize and put them on a single record and you get this. Songs have become shorter and shorter again, with almost none passing the 4 min mark, with the rule being plain hard rock sounding most of the time very poppish and cheezy. Add this a relative similarity in all the songs and you get... nothing. Clearly an album for core Def Leppard fans only.

TestamentMyspace.com - The Formation of Damnation 2008
7.8
Non-Prog Thrash Metal
Some kind of "reunion" album... seems like Testament won't do commercial thrash again, as this release is still strongly rooted in the thrash/death of their last three albums, but there are hints of the sound of their debut album The Legacy here too. Two of the historic members (Skolnick, Christian) are back, and this release is much more solid than the last two. The music is quite comparable to the Low album with strong vocals by Chuck Billy (using almost exclusively his normal voice here except on one track), but as Low was more a transitional album, this is more like a "best of" album... and much less diverse than Low, with the second half of the album being quite repetitive.

Symphonic Prog Power Metal
Nothing much to say... I was blown away at the first listen. Songs mix orchestral power metal with symphonic prog metal, and the classical interludes really blend very well with the more aggressive songs. The vocals are amazing... sometimes really strong on the power parts, sometimes really melodic on the mellow parts. A must have in any music collection...

NightingaleMyspace.com - Nightfall Overture 2005, Best Of
7.5
Prog-Related Album Oriented Rock
Not really my taste... Except the first song, "Nightfall
Overture", this is more or less pretty straightforward hard
rock with some keyboards, looking towards bands like Journey or
Payne-era Asia. Too bad, because Nightingale recorded better
songs on their first four albums...

The Morningside - The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past 2007
8.6
Atmospheric Prog Post Doom Metal
This album is available... as a free download at the band's website! So I gave it a try...

Not bad... a mix of post metal with long atmospheric instrumental parts and doom/death metal in the vein of early Katatonia (first album, or Brave Murder Day). I really enjoyed the music... but the vocals are really not my taste. The growled/screamed vocals on tracks #2 and #3 are horrible (the usual bad gurgling), and the clean vocals on track #4 lack emotion. Still a nice release...

Virgin BlackMyspace.com - Requiem - Fortissimo 2008
7.7
Retro Prog-Related Death Metal
A disappointing release...

I was expecting a heavier "Mezzo Forte" with a mix of operatic music and doom metal... but this is simply "Mezzo Forte" with growled vocals and almost no classical moments. The band takes the melodies from the previous album and revamps them in an early My Dying Bride/Paradise Lost way. The vocals are 100% harsh (at least the male vocals)... and if you don't like growling you certainly won't like this album at all, even if this type of vocals is here perfectly performed and enjoyable, due to the use of no screams at all (it's more like a low rumble). Still remains a good moment: the last three songs...

AyreonMyspace.com - 01011001 2008
9.2
Symphonic Prog Metal
This album is a strong follow up to The Human Equation. Very well produced with vocalists and musicians giving the best of them. It has its good moments (I could even say it has his great moments... some of the songs here are unbelievable) and also its cheezy parts like its predecessor.

WindsMyspace.com - The Imaginary Direction of Time 2004
8.5
Atmospheric Prog Metal
I don't know what to think of this album... I tend to like the music, with nice melodies and great use of classical instruments, but at the same time almost each song contains some "cheezy" parts that I find completely uninteresting. Not to mention the pointless last track (a couple piano notes at the beginning and at the end, and in between three minutes of silence)...

Orchestral Prog Post Doom Metal/Classical
This is the most mature and balanced work from this great australian band... Imagine a mix of doom metal (in the vein of Cryptal Darkness, another australian band) and classical music, with orchestral parts that would make Therion and other symphonic metal bands look like amateurs. Previous efforts were not bad, but they lacked the quality of a real orchestra, well produced vocals and music...

AgallochMyspace.com - Ashes Against The Grain 2006
8.9
Prog Post Metal
I don't really know what to think of this album... the band
continues on the same post metal sound, this time less bleak
and repetitive than on The Mantle, and the music is really good
here... but unfortunately the vocals are horrible. There are
less clean vocals, and when the singer uses harsh vocals (that
is on every track except the three instrumentals), it's
unfortunately some really ugly gurgling voice...

Psychedelic Prog Post Doom Metal/Rock
Another original album... somewhere between Black Sabbath (with
a singer really sounding like Ozzy Osborne on drugs) and Ulver
(the latest stuff). I just regret the pointless last track
(spoken words in german over a background noise)...

NoekkMyspace.com - The Grimalkin 2006
9.9
Prog Post Metal
This is a quite original album... the structure, art cover, length of songs (10-20 minutes) and sometimes even the music remind me a lot of Opeth's Morningrise, but without growls (none here, the vocals are all operatic). But overall this sounds more like avant-garde rock/metal, in the vein of Arcturus' La Masquerade Infernale.

I just regret there aren't more songs... I would have enjoyed more than only three.

AmorphisMyspace.com - Silent Waters 2007
9.7
Non-Prog Death Metal
This album really grew on me after each listen during the past
two months. The major improvement here is clearly the vocals,
with much more nuances than on the previous album. Musically it
is close to their last release "Eclipse", with the same blend
of folk and power metal with a touch of death metal (mainly the
growls). A bit more extreme in times (more growls are used on
this release, sometimes successfully like on the first two
tracks, sometimes out of place like on "Towards and Against" or
"The White Swan"), a bit mellower in other times (out of ten
songs, four are power ballads and one, "Enigma", is a pure
folkish acoustic tune).

AntimatterMyspace.com - Leaving Eden 2007
9.9
Atmospheric Prog-Related Metal/Rock
Another masterpiece from an inspired Mick Moss...

The departure of Duncan Patterson and hiring of Danny Cavanagh from Anathema as a session guitarist made a lot of people say that this album could be seen as the new Anathema album, but this is still Antimatter... somewhere between their last two albums. This record retains the acoustic feeling and melancholy of "Planetary Confinement" with more aggressive moments and upbeat songs like on "Lights Out". Three thumbs up...

Probably their best album. This one sounds very modern and accessible, with even more "anti-system" songs. MegaDave strikes again...

9.2
Experimental Prog Metal
One of the most original albums I've heard recently... the music reminds me a lot of the heavier improvs by King Crimson and KONG. In fact, the album sounds really heavy, with a lot of aggressive riffs (however tempered by the use of a harp and a violin), the only calm moments being the two non-instrumental songs "Cold Inside" and "Shade" sung by Riverside's lead singer Mariusz Duda.

Gary Hughes - Once And Future King 2003
7.2
Non-Prog Album Oriented Rock/Power Metal
This is a concept album around the story of King Arthur. The music is a mix of AOR and power metal... unfortunately sounding too much poppish and cheesy (for example, I would have expected a song like "The Hard Way", featuring one of the darkest characters of the story, Mordred, sounding dark and heavy, and not sounding like Simply Red). Two highlights on the album however: the gorgeous " Believe Enough To Fight" and the title track, a great power ballad.

UlverMyspace.com - Perdition City: Music to an Interior Film 2000
9.7
Experimental Prog Post Metal
Frankly I have never heard an album like this... perhaps the latest 3rd And The Mortal would be the closest thing I could think of if I would try to make a (vague) comparison. Lots of experimental stuff on this almost quasi instrumental album (vocals can be heard only on tracks 2 and 9, some other tracks having some spoken parts). Very dark, with an electronic/trip hop dominant sound... great to listen at night.

Fates WarningMyspace.com - A Pleasant Shade of Grey 1997
9.4
Prog Metal
This album is on the mellow side of prog metal. Most of the songs are very emotional (not mentioning the ballads that have a large place here), sometimes even dark and depressive, with all the musicians doing a great job. The technical side is not forgotten, giving a balanced feeling to the 12 compositions. The vocals are outstanding, always between dream and doom...
