Neil Young (& Crazy Horse) - Live Rust reviewed by Soul Dreamer at Progfreak.com

9.3
Non-Prog Rock

This is IMO one of the best Live albums of all times. It start with an acoustic set. Then from the middle of the album the electric guitars come out and the album really rocks! This is one album I wish I could judge only for the album, not the individual tracks. Overall it's so much better than the individual tracks. Also, stuff like progressiveness, experimentality and technicality don't mean much to me here...it just makes me want to sing along and jump! PLAY IT LOUD!

Generally I only comment on albums I like. This is one I don't like. I post it here only to show that I don't like everything....

Good debut album. The music has some resemblance to bands like Oceansize, The Pineapple Thief, Pure Reason Revolution. Might be classified as "Post-progressive Rock"

We've got a winner here! The style didn't change much from the "Natural Disaster" album, but this album contains no filler, all tracks are top the only somewhat weaker track I can spot is "Get off Get Out". This album is a classic which will stand the test of time.

Symphonic Prog Rock

This is a return to form of Spock's Beard: Much better than the previous records, on par with V. It's jazzy symphonic rock (don't know where to put the jazzy part in the tag editor...) and I think it's a great record.

Prog Metal/Rock

Great album and debut! This is metal mixed with jazzy influences. There are a few growls here but don't let it take you away from the music, it's great (like Opeth...) Any lover of Opeth will love this also.

Neo Prog Rock

Big surprise for me, and new find of the year 2009 so far this mixture of Marillion (Fish era) and Galahad with superb quality (symphonic) neo prog. The singer has a voice which reminds me strongly of Cousins of the Strawbs! What a great album!

Neo Prog Rock

This is the best album I heard in a long time. I'm completely overwhelmed by it. This is definitely a masterpiece. The tags here don't do it right, it should be something like post neo prog. I could describe the music as a mixture of Radiohead, Talk Talk and Marillion but that doesn't do this unique album right. The album is actually one track, split up in 5 pieces. It's a concept album about sleep and dream. It is  creative, coherent and marvelous music which doesn't fail in all the 53 minutes, and in the end leaves you wanting just one thing: To hear it again.

Spacey Prog-Related Metal

The music on this album is quite good, it resembles somewhat Porcupine Tree (Stupid Dream, in Absentia). However, there is very much talking bullsh*t  in between the rather good musical tracks.

Metal

This is a good metal album (PA 4 stars). The best tracks imo are "January Sun" (excellent!) and Christ O and Silently. The rest is not bad either, but somewhat less. Some tracks are somewhat cheesy metal (e.g. Wish you were here which starts out nice, but quickly becomes boring). I don't like the version of "Gethsemane" very much, I think the original with Ian Gillan in Jesus Christ Superstar is better. The singer just does not hit the  emotion of the song enough, it's too polished, it should be more raw.

Symphonic Prog Rock

The best album upto now of 2006 IMO. This is high quality symphonic rock. Also the vocalist is excellent, he reminds me somewhat of Gabriel in his better years. The music has a hint of a mixture of ELP and Genesis, but with a strong Italian flavour to it.

This album is the first I ever heard of this band. The music has a VERY high Marillion (Fish era) feel to it.

Technical Prog

This album shows that Genesis without Gabriel can be just as good as Genesis with Gabriel. There is not one weak track or filler on this album. Also the sound quality is much better than on the "old Genesis" albums

Prog-Related Rock

The development of Therion is clear,  Vovin is well-placed between Theli and Deggial: It is one step more away from metal and one step further to being completely opera/classical oriented. Technically it's a bit better than Theli, allthough I regret the exclusion of the more uptempo parts of Theli. The high female voices are especially beautiful on this album and resemble "Siren of the Woods" of Theli

Prog-Related Rock

Here Therion leave the path of "doom metal" completely. This album is totally opera/classical oriented. The vocals are totally classical, except one song (Flesh of the Gods). Some tracks are 100% classical, with (almost) no rock influence. I cannot classify this album as any form of "metal", the closest I can get is "Gothic Rock" but it should be "Opera Rock".

Symphonic Prog Rock

I bought this album when I was a student, just after the release. I listened to it in the record shop for maybe 5 minutes and knew that I wanted it, just because of the first track. I never regretted that decision (as with many other albums I really did regret!) because this album has some of the best Renaissance musics ever.

Prog-Related Metal

I don't know where to start about this album..It's absolutely unique..Never has a symbiosis between a symphony orchestra and a Metal band been created that really worked, but here it does! Thanks to the genious of Michael Kamen, the director of the San Francisco Philharmonic, who did a titan's job writing all the arrangements for band and orchestra, this is the first example of successfully combining Metal and Symphony Orchestra. Forget Deep Purple and the London Philharmonic, where the band and the orchestra just play different tracks. Forget other attempts where the orchestra just acts as "sweetener" for the music. Here the band and orchestra play an equal part, filling eachother with beautiful contrapoint, and layer upon layer of magnificent music. One of my all-time favorite albums!

Prog-Related

This is not metal. It's very accoustic. Also, this EP is clearly less quality than the studio albums "Out  of Myself" and "Second Life Syndrome". Having said that, there's still a lot of quality on this album.
