Sonata ArcticaMyspace.com - Winterheart's Guild 2003
8.7
Non-Prog Speed Metal
These guys play FAST ... but also quite melodic. Their music is
very classical, with lots of keyboard wizardry and cleverly
constructed chord progressions, while maintaining a nice raw
edge and drive. And of course they're not playing fast all the
time ... they balance it out quite well with some ballads and
poppish tunes.

Can - Tago Mago 1971
8.7
Minimalistic Prog Krautrock
This is better than I expected. I didn't like Ege Bamyasi too
much, and Future Days didn't thrill me. But on this double
album they manage to offer a good mix of different styles. I
really like the weird experimentations they make on the second
half, but the first 4 tracks are also great ... good grooves
and interesting improvisations. It's not really melodic, no
memorable tunes, but that's not unusual in this style of music,
which I'd describe as a mix of Space Rock and Psychedelic
Experimental Music.

NoekkMyspace.com - The Grimalkin 2006
8.0
Symphonic Prog Post Metal
I am not yet sure what to make of this. Noekk is a band which consists of Black/Avant-Metal musicians, and the album sounds like a darker version of Empyrium, with a more progressive edge and quite heavy riffs - not metal though, and no growling. Instead we get opera-like vocals and a very retro sound - in fact I don't recall them using any modern instruments.

The problem is the substance. I really enjoyed listening to this album, but I also read a negative review about the album which essentially questioned the motivation of the artists. Maybe the reviewer was biased against the vocals - they're an acquired taste.

If you're only going to buy one Alanis Morrissette album ...
make it that one. Exceptional vocals and lyrics, a great band
which plays flawlessly, and the compositions are even a bit
experimental.

Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra 1973
8.3
Italian Symphonic Prog Rock
Very nice! This is the second Italian prog rock album that I listened to - the first one was Le Orme - Felona e Sorona, and I much more prefer this one (although the other one will surely grow on me - it is more subtle).

I really like the power and energy in this music, musicianship is top notch, and it has great dynamics. To me it sounds like a combination of Camel and Anekdoten, very dark at times, even heavy.

Blues SaracenoMyspace.com - Hairpick 1994
8.0
Instrumental Non-Prog Rock
Blues Saraceno is a strange kind of guitarist. He's a shredder,
but although he actually rarely ever plays a Blues song, his
style is really bluesy. So although this is a 100% shred album,
it's not just something for guitarists. Very accessible at all
times, but musicianship is top throughout.

Arctic Monkeys - Who The Fuck Are The Arctic Monkeys? 2006, EP
6.5
Non-Prog Rock
There's a great hype surrounding the Arctic Monkeys ... apparently they got famous by distributing their songs for free on their website and later they got signed to a major label because of their popularity.

Well, the music is not THAT great. Alternative Rock with Punk influences, well done musically but nothing special either. If you're into acts like Frank Ferdinand or the Kaiser Chiefs you should check it out.

EdenbridgeMyspace.com - The Grand Design 2006

Non-Prog Metal
A decent album, but it seems a bit directionless. The vocals
are outstanding, a strong and unique voice. But the symphonic
parts seem a bit uninspired.

Steve VaiMyspace.com - Alien Love Secrets 1995
9.5
Instrumental Prog-Related Rock
This is the perfect album to get into Vai. It's a perfect mix
of very accessible music from the Blues/Rock domain, as well as
some crazy stuff like the highly experimental Ya-Yo Gakk, or
the extremely heavy Kill The Guy With The Ball. It covers many
- but not nearly all - facets of Vai's style.

Steve VaiMyspace.com - Fire Garden 1996
8.8
Instrumental Non-Prog Rock
I like all Vai albums, but I think that this may be his most balanced output. The first half is purely instrumental (some "experiments" in the short tracks aside), and it's as close as Vai ever got to Satriani's style. But even here each song contains some weird parts that Satch would never do.

I prefer the second half though, and the ending of the first half with the brilliant Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite. The second half also features Vai on vocals on every track except the last one, and he does a really good job. He has a powerful voice with much variability, and songwriting is really great here. What's left to wish?

Tori AmosMyspace.com - Under the Pink 1994
8.9
Minimalistic Prog-Related Post Pop
My favorite Tori Amos album, although I have to admit that I
lost track of her after Choirgirl Hotel. It is very calm, and
half of the tracks are without drums or bass. All kinds of
experimental elements are used - noisy guitars and instruments
used out of context, for example on Bells for Her where Tori
uses the piano to emulate bells. What I love most about this
album are the odd melodies that Tori seems to write
effortlessly, and the totally natural and symbiotic merging of
her piano playing and the vocals.

This one is even better than the debut. Production is better,
and the songs are generally a bit more refined.

Frank ZappaMyspace.com - Zappa In New York 1976, Live
8.4
Avant-Garde Prog Rock
This double live album is a great mix of humor and musicianship. Especially Cruising for Burgers and the two versions of Black Page are very dense and demanding pieces, while Titties and Beer or Punky Whips are more comedy than music. I also really like the Illinois Enema Bandit, which is the most straight forward Zappa Blues song that I know.

A very good album to get to know Zappa!

Canvas SolarisMyspace.com - Spatial / Design 2003, EP
8.0
Instrumental Technical Prog Metal
This is extremely inaccessible, technical metal. It reminds me
of Power of Omens a lot, but with more consistency in the
"songwriting". I put that in quotes because these aren't really
songs in the original sense of the word, there are hardly any
repeating structures.

Rage - Speak of the Dead 2006
8.4
Orchestral Non-Prog Metal
Not bad at all. Rage are a very experienced band, and they
manage to create a really good mix of classical music and power
metal. Reminds me of Savatage a lot, or more precisely: Trans
Siberian Orchestra, only more heavy.

Beyond FearMyspace.com - Beyond Fear 2006
7.7
Retro Non-Prog Power Metal
This is a decent output by former Judas Priest vocalist Tim
"Ripper" Owens ... it really sounds much like Judas Priest, not
just because of the vocals, but also the songwriting and
production. I enjoyed listening to the album, but I failed to
see the point of making such an album. They will definitely be
a cool band on stage though - maybe as a support act for Judas
Priest? ;-)

Jamiroquai - The Return Of The Space Cowboy 1994
9.0
Prog-Related Fusion
A real classic. Jamiroquai got more and more commercial on the
albums which followed this one, but here he's very original,
not at all commercial and funky as hell. An essential album for
anyone even remotely interested in Funk.

Jeff Beck - There And Back 1980
8.1
Instrumental Neo Prog-Related Jazz
Jazz-Fusion ... barely. The songs are not very complex, but the
chord progressions are sufficiently advanced in many songs. The
sound is very much early 80s, with a dose of disco thrown in,
at least in the drum sound and funky bass. Not his best
album, but surely a pleasant listen!

essential Maiden tracks.
