OpethListen - Watershed 2008
8.9
Symphonic Prog Extreme Metal
A very strong release. Mikael is still the main songwriter, but it seems like the other band members (especially the new ones at drums and 2nd guitar) add their influences to the compositions more prominently than on the previous albums. And the keyboards are no longer side effects like on Ghost Reveries - in fact they give this a lush, symphonic touch which reminds me of Camel - who Mikael is a huge fan of - more than anything they did before. The growling is still there, but to a lesser extent - for the first time clean vocals dominate a heavy Opeth album. Add to that the epic long track, and you get - a masterly prog album!

Prince - The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale 1999
8.8
Non-Prog Jazz/Rock
This is a Jazz album ... with a decent Rock influence and some Soul/Funk elements. It's quite mellow with a few melancholic passages/songs ... the guitar is not as prominent as on Chaos and Disorder, traditional Jazz instruments dominate the album, together with the beautiful vocal arrangements.

Eclectic Non-Prog Rock
On this album Prince really rocks out ... at least on half of the tracks. Some brilliant guitar work and awesome vocal arrangements throughout, many different styles ... a really good album!

Psychedelic Prog Rock
Finally it was re-released, and I purchased it today. I now have all regular Porcupine Tree albums, and this is an essential one. Beautiful melodies, astonishing vocal arrangements and a broad range of styles.

How cool is that? Arjen Lucassen and Tobias Sammet join forces to record a cover of Alice Cooper's classic song "Elected".

Cajun Technical Stoner Prog Death Metal
It's absolutely amazing how these guys shift from majestic Doom/Stoner Metal to Death Metal/Grindcore in the blink of an eye. The music is like a combination of Mastodon and Down, very technical and quirky, but also many calm/majestic parts with quite a few major chords as well. Together with Cajun/New Orleans acoustic parts this makes for a very interesting listening experience.

Prog-Related Power Metal
Wow ... I'm slightly underwhelmed. This is decent melodic metal, but after the first two discs I was expecting a little bit more. Especially compared to Ayreon's 01011001 this is a bit of a let down.

EnslavedListen - Isa 2004
8.1
Prog Black Metal
It may seem strange, but although this is Black Metal it sounds quite calm to me. It's quite melodic too, with the odd twist here and there, and vocals oscillating between ghastly screams and multi layered clean vocals. Very interesting!

RPWLListen - The RPWL Experience 2008
7.9
Symphonic Neo Prog Rock
Another nice release ... they still sound like a combination of Arena, Marillion and Pink Floyd, but I like their songs, and musicianship/production is very solid. On second listen it seemed a bit boring to me though ... at least some of the tracks.

Devin TownsendListen - Accelerated Evolution 2003
8.7
Epic Prog-Related Metal
In a nutshell this is a less eclectic, less experimental and less progressive version of Terria. Devin's most accessible album to date, and I enjoy listening to it very much - great melodies on vocals and guitar, and his trademark wall of sound.

A very good effort - it continues to grow on me with each spin. Very eclectic, with some really heavy parts and some calm, acoustic passages.

Death AngelListen - Killing Season 2008
7.5
Non-Prog Thrash Metal
I bought the limited vinyl edition (picture disc) because I absolutely adore their masterpiece Act III from 1990, and I had read in a magazine that this album could be compared to it. Well ... I'm sorry to say that it can't. Technically it's still melodic thrash, but the spirit's gone - no more magical melodies, riffs and interludes, it's "just" a decent album.

Scorpions - Lonesome Crow 1972

Experimental Prog-Related Krautrock
This clearly isn't metal at all ... Krautrock and Psychedelic Rock are the obvious influences. There's even an experimental long track on the album!

Scorpions - Virgin Killer 1976

Non-Prog Hard Rock/Metal
Their last album with guitarist Ulrich Roth, who was largely responsible for their psychedelic tendencies. It's also their last album which I would call rock ... after it their style moved decisively towards metal. A really good release, very energetic and musically quite impressive.

Wonderful! Very well produced, but not too polished. Quite epic, but not too complex ... many interesting twists and turns, but never too flashy. Essential listening for every fan of Black Metal!

Dark SunsListen - Grave Human Genuine 2008
8.8
Experimental Prog Metal
Wow ... this album blew me away. I saw the band two years ago on tour with Pain of Salvation, and it seems like PoS left quite an impression on them ... they had already started to leave their gothic/doom roots at that point, but this here is fully fledged Progressive Metal which *almost* reaches PoS in terms of diversity and creativity.

Be sure to check out the "GHG - Teaser" on their myspace page!

PrismaListen - Collusion 2006
8.2
Experimental Prog Metal
This really sounds a lot like Tool, especially because of the guitar sound and riffing. The vocalist is good but not as varied as Maynard James Keenan - he doesn't do the drawn out screams for example. Despite of the similarity to Tool the music is much less dark and menacing - imagine a combination of Tool, Oceansize and Amplifier and you're just about there.

FantômasListen - The Director's Cut 2001
8.5
Experimental Prog Metal
An album which consists entirely of covers of famous horror movie themes ... I really like it. The absolutely free-style experimentation of the debut shines through here and there, but generally they stay close to the structure/form of the original composition. The brilliance and weirdness lies in how they add the unique style of their debut to these compositions.

Eclectic Prog Metal
Very nice! It's less quirky and flashy than Dream Theater's When Dream and Day Unite, but also more intense and emotional. I really like the songs!
