MarillionMyspace.com - Script for a Jester's Tear 1983
7.5
English/British Prog Rock
While progressive rock had gone underground and the the progressive rock icons of the 1960s and 1970s had taken other musical directions, British Marillion were among those who kept progressive music alive 1980s, and carried on its high brow concepts, complex songwriting and, with Fish as the front man, its theatricality.

"Script for a Jester's" tear was both Marillion's debut album (they'd previously release a maxi single) and their breakthrough, and it is a release which is generally held in high esteem and considered an important milestone in the history of progressive rock. While I can certainly understand why "Script for a Jester's Tear" has received so much acclaim as it has, it does not really rock my boat as much as many other progressive rock releases do. That being said, "Script for a Jester's Tear" is a very good release, I think, with nothing but high quality progressive music on it.

All the songs on the album are quite long, ranging from around five minutes to around 8 minutes. And, being progressive music, they are not just long, but also complex with lots of parts, changes and some alternative takes on the 4/4 meter. That being said, the music is actually not overly technical, and only rarely do Marillion make use of odd time signatures and other things that are "exotic" to Western ears.

One of the reasons why "Script for a Jester's Tear" does not turn me that much on is the lack of guitar prominence (I am more of a guitar guy; and there are some very ... -> show full review

An incredible album which managed to combine the art of the concept album with the commercial success of pop/prog.

A wonderful compilation album consisting of 2 CDs of 29 songs. 14 with Fish on vocals and 15 with Steve Hogarth on vocals. A perfect introduction to Marillion.

MarillionMyspace.com - Brave 1994
9.3
Neo Prog Rock
I have just recently been introduced to Marillion and have been pleasantly surprised with what I have heard so far. Unlike most people who start with the earlier Fish albums, my initial taste of this British group was with the albums Marbles, Brave and Afraid of Sunlight (which happen to be the only three albums I have listened to at the date of this review). I must say, I do like the sound these guys make.

Brave is a concept album, but I'm going to spend very little time (if any) in this review discussing the concept since I much prefer focusing on the music itself. While the story in the music may be worthy of some additional appreciation, it's always the music that makes or breaks an album. Brave is chock-full of very good music.

"Bridge"

The opening track is hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric as the setting is appropriately set for the story that is to be told over the course of the album. The music is soft, with the vocals almost being whispered to convey the anguish and despair of the situation. While the song clocks in at just under three minutes, I always wish it would last a little longer since the music truly is beautiful through here.

"Living with the Big Lie"

What a great song this is! Wonderful lyrical passages combined with a hard-driving melody really make this a standout song. Marillion may be considered a neo-prog band, yet the sound on this song is so fresh and powerful (even 12 years later) that I would never consider this to be even remotely derivative.

"Runaway"

Things slow down a bit as this third song continues the musical bliss that started from the opening sounds of the album. Strong contributions from all members of the band meld to make a soft, subtle sound that is pleasing to the ears and warming to the heart. (I ... -> show full review

MarillionMyspace.com - Somewhere Else 2007
8.1
Neo Prog Rock/Pop
It was released in Germany today and I already listened to it ... I like it very much. I'm not a big fan of Marillion and I only know a few of their albums (Script, Seasons End + some other tracks), but I like what they did on Somewhere Else. It's not too progressive (6/10, when Prog-Related would be 4/10 and the recently released Blind Ego - Mirror somewhere slightly above 5/10 ), but the occasional elaborate bass playing, clever use of effects and texturing + cool mood-swings together with the good songwriting really convinced me.

I never had much love for the sound of the 80s ... I'm trying not to be biased, but it is hard. It's a very solid album, but even with the production, overly emotional vocals and clichee rock guitar aside I can't see what's so damn special about it.
